One to two hours

Crystal Caves – 69 Main Street Atherton, next to Rockmans. Open Mon – Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm, Sat 8:30am to 4:00pm, Sun 10:00am to 4:00pm. Self Guided cave tours, private collection of minerals, crystals and fossils from all around the world displayed in man made caves behind the shop, wide range of jewellery and gift items for sale. Fee for tour.

Twin Kauri Pines, Yungaburra, Queensland, AustraliaHou Wang Temple – 86 Herberton Road, Atherton. Travel down Main Streeet, Atherton towards Herberton about1 kilometre, just past Platypus Park, on the left is Atherton Chinatown. Chinatown has an interpretive center for the Hou Wang Temple full of Chinese history and artifacts on display. Open Wednesdays to Sundays from 11:00am to 4:00pm, ½ hour tours available throughout the day, last guided tour at 3:30pm. Fee for tours.

Hastie Swamp – Hastie Road, Atherton. 1.8km south of the Info Centre along Herberton Road. Turn left into Hastie Road then right into Koci Road. Travel 1.3km to Hastie Swamp bird hide which is two stories high and part of the Qld Heritage Trail. It also has displays featuring the Swamps bird life and history. Open 7 days a week. No Charge

Hallorans Hill Lookout – Travel up Robert Street and turn left into Twelfth Avenue and then take the first right into Baxter Avenue following the signed boulders to the top of the hill. Hallorans Hill offers a great playground for the kids, toilets, free electronic BBQ facilities and beautiful views of the Tablelands including Tinaroo dam, seven sisters cinder volcanoes and in the far distance Mt Bartle Frere Qld's Highest Mountain. No Charge

Hallorans Hill Walking Track – We suggest that you drive up Robert Street, turn left into Louise Street and travel along until you come to the park next to the Hospital. Drive into the environmental park on the right hand side, park and lock up your vehicle and follow the path, starting at the wooden bridge. The path meanders along side the creek up the lookout on Hallorans Hill. This lovely walk is best done early morning or later in the afternoon to watch the sun set. Can take up to 2 hours, including a rest at the lookout. A suggestion: take a sandwich and bottle of water take a break and enjoy the great view. No charge

Atherton Birds of Prey – 86 Herberton Road adjacent to the Atherton Chinatown. Get close to eagles, falcons, owls and other native birds. See them flying free and hold a small crocodile or python. Hours Wednesdays to Sundays 11am and 2pm. Fee for tours.

Platypus Park
– Herberton Road Atherton just pass the Railway Line on the left. Platypus Park offers children’s undercover playground, walk around the creek, electronic BBQ, duck feeding and Platypus viewing. We suggest you feed the ducks first, then sit quietly and wait for the Platypus to appear. Best times for Platypus viewing is early morning or evening. No Charge

Mt Hypipamee Crater – 32 Klm south of the Information Centre. The quickest way to get there is to travel up Robert Street follow the road around past the Mobil Service Station. This road becomes the Kennedy Highway. Continue on until you see the sign for Mt Hypipamee National Park. It is about a 10-minute walk from the car park to the crater along a concrete path which is wheelchair accessible. Along the way there is another ‘natural’ track to the Dinner Falls. No charge.

Curtain and Cathedral Fig Trees - Heading 12 km east towards Yungaburra there is a turn off to the right for the Curtain Fig Tree. The Famous Fig Tree is located about 2 km down Curtain Fig Tree Road. There is parking available and the boardwalk around the tree is wheelchair friendly. Traveling on through Yungaburra and past Lake Barrine turn off left down Boar Pocket Road to the Cathedral Fig Tree the road is sealed to the Tree, parking is available and the walk to the Tree is short. No Charge

Twin Kauri Pines and the Giant Red Cedar Tree – These huge Twin Kauri Pines are located on the shore of Lake Barrine just a two-minute walk from the Tea House. Lake Barrine is located approx. 22km from the Information Centre along the Gillies Hwy through the township of Yungaburra. No Charge Lake

Lake Eacham, near Yungaburra, QueenslandEacham and Lake Barrine – Travel east from Atherton along the Gillies Hwy through Yungaburra until you reach the Lake Eacham Roadhouse, turn right at the roadhouse and then turn left at the sign for Lake Eacham. Lake Eacham is ideal for swimming and picnic BBQ’s or you can take the 3 km walk around the Lake through the rainforest. There are also viewing platforms for the fish at the front of the lake and one also at the side for bottom breathing turtles. Returning back to the highway turn right at the road house onto the Gillies Hwy until you see the sign for Lake Barrine. Lake Barrine offers regular 45 minute cruises around the lake, during which you get to see ducks, birds, eels, fish and if lucky, the big python out sunning himself. There is also a 6km walk around the lake, a souvenir shop, the twin Kauri Pines and the Historic Tea house where you can relax on the veranda and enjoy a cuppa and some scones. Fee for cruise.

Yungaburra Township – Yungaburra, located 12km from Atherton along the Gillies Hwy it is a tranquil, picturesque village nestled in a pocket of open rainforest. This town has the largest number of Heritage Trust listed buildings in Queensland. A special attraction is the Peterson Creek Walking Circuit, where platypus and tree-kangaroos can often be spotted. Make sure you also find time to experience the 2 hour Tinaburra Wildlife Sunset Cruise around Lake Tinaroo, bookings are essential. Phone: 0417 646 088 or (07) 4095 3658

Chalet Rainforest Gallery – The Gallery has a host of craft items, gifts and souvenirs for sale, timber products and a large fascinating display of hand made Forest People. Quincan Gallery – The Gallery has a large range of aboriginal art and artifacts, painting, clothing, souvenirs, gift items for sale and a coffee shop with home made cakes. Free Entry

Gem Gallery – At the Gallery you can learn all about solid Australian Opals, enjoy their indoor/outdoor coffee shop and view their wide range of Jewellery made on the premises. Open 7 days a week. Free Entry

Lake Eacham Hotel – This heritage-listed landmark is situated in the center of Yungaburra village. Memorabilia displayed of the early 20th century people and local events, represent one of the best collection of early Tropical North Queensland life on public display. Malanda – This Township is the center of the Dairying industry on the Tablelands, and Malanda still holds the record of the longest milk run in the world.

Malanda Falls Visitor Centre – In the centre, with its interpretive centre, you can learn how the volcanic Tableland was formed, and how animals, plants and people have survived and adapted. It also offers Indigenous Guided Walks through the Rainforest. Fee for tours.

Malanda Hotel – This historic hotel was built in 1911 and is reputedly the largest timber building in the Southern Hemisphere. It features beautiful local timber inside. Malanda Dairy Centre – This center offers tours on Monday to Friday 10.30am & 11.30am. The Café is open 7 days a week 9.30 to 3pm

Herberton – Just 20 minutes from Atherton is the Tablelands oldest town Herberton. This historic town has a lot to offer with its heritage-themed walks, camera museum and the mining and information centre.

Herberton Historic Village –a collection of old buildings from Herberton’s past, lovingly preserved and a must see for all those folks who enjoy looking at past relics with all their fond memories.

Herberton Mining and Information Centre The centre is built on part of the Great Northern Reward Claim purchased by the miners who discovered payable amounts of tin ore on this site on the 19th April in 1880. This educational centre has a Metal room, Mining room, Herberton room, Minerals room plus a range of brochures and maps for the visitors. Outside of the centre is a short walk along formed tracks it will take you pass the relics of the mines that made up the Great Northern Claim – one of the richest on the tin field. Fee for tour,

Randal`s Camera Museum – Travel along towards Herberton from Atherton for approx. 15 km until you reach the town of Herberton. The camera shop is located on the corner on the right hand side of the road within the first block of shops. There are 100s of cameras ranging from the first camera ever made to spy cameras used in the war, to modern day professional cameras. This is well worth the visit as you will be amazed at some of the “secret” cameras from days gone by. Open from 9am to 5pm daily. Fee for admission.

Two to four hours

Ravenshoe – Queensland`s Highest Town is set in lush rainforest and is the home of Qld's largest wind farm. This town is only 45 minutes from Atherton along the Kennedy Highway and has many attractions including Wins Gallery, Ravenshoe Visitor Centre, Nganyali Interpretive Centre and the historic Ambulance Station arts and crafts.

Windy Hill, Ravenshoe, Queensland, AustraliaMillstream Falls – The turnoff to the falls turnoff is located 3.5km out of Ravenshoe on the Kennedy Highway, follow the gravel road until you reach the picnic area. When they are in flood these falls are the widest in Australia and part of the huge Herbert river system. No charge.

Little Millstream Falls
– These falls bubble and roar its way down a vast mass of boulders to spill into a huge pool. To reach the falls, drive down the Tully Falls road until you see the sign on the right then follow the gravel road. The walking track along the natural path takes approx 35 minutes each way. No charge.

Windy Hill – Travel along the Kennedy Highway towards Ravenshoe. Approx. 50 kms south of the Information Centre, you will see the large wind turbines spread out on the green hills of Ravenshoe. No Charge You may enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at the Windy Hill Hut and relax while you take in the views.

Baldy Mountain Walking Track - The walk is easily reached via Rifle Range Road, which is the first turn to the right after the railway line on Herberton Road opposite Platypus Park. The walk begins 600 metres down Rifle Range Road just before the Thompson Creek crossing. The 200-metre climb is over 2 km and is of moderate grade but there are some steep sections to be encountered. The walk takes approx. 2-3 hours to complete depending on the walker. Ensure you wear good walking shoes because of loose rock, take a bottle of water, and wear a hat and sun cream if walking in our summer months. No Charge

Coffee Plantation (NQ Gold Coffee) – NQ Gold Coffee Plantation is approx. 40km from the Information Centre. Travel on the Kennedy Highway to Mareeba and continue through the town until you cross the bridge. The first turn on the left is Dimbulah Road. Drive along this road for about 10.2km until you see a sign for NQ Gold or Brunos Coffee on the right hand side of the road. There you will be given a guided tour of the Coffee Plantation and they will explain every step of the coffee making process from growing to brewing, chocolate coated coffee beans etc. Allow at least two hours, as it is extremely informative.

Coffee Works – Follow the signs along the Kennedy Highway to Mareeba about 30 minutes drive. On arriving in Mareeba turn left at the Jackaroo Motel and then take the next turn to the right down Mason Street and you will see the sign for the Coffee Works. The Coffee Works offers an in depth look at the commercial side of coffee production and have a huge range of coffees, plungers, mugs and other gift items for sale. A chocolate making section at rear of complex is a must to visit and sample the goodies. The coffee shop has cakes and slices and other meals available. Fee for tours.

Tichum Creek Coffee – Follow the Kennedy Highway out of Mareeba towards Cairns for 15km the turnoff for Tichum Creek is opposite the Davis Creek Road turnoff. Your gracious host will share with you the complete coffee story from seedling to tasting their own freshly prepared coffee produces while you enjoy some for their sweet or savoury treats. They also have a collection of coffee pots and grinders. Open 9am to 4.00pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Zillie Falls near Millaa Millaa on the Atherton TablelandsJaques Coffee Plantation – Travel along the Kennedy Highway towards Cairns for 8km until you see the sign for Jaques Coffee Plantation just after the Emerald Creek Bridge. On this Plantation the tour includes a movie on coffee, a Safari ride around the plantation on the “The Bean Machine”, see Australia’s first mechanical coffee harvester, learn about how the coffee is grown, processed and roasted, enjoy a cappuccino or latte and taste the Coffee Liqueur at the Café. The plantation also has 20 min or 40 minute Microlight Flights over the plantation and Mareeba. Fee for flights and tours. Open from 9am to 5pm 7 days a week.

Mount Uncle Distillery –Along the Kennedy Highway traveling towards Mareeba, after you drive through Walkamin turnoff to the left down Hansen Road, and then take the first right hand turn into Chewko Road where you will see a sign to the Mount Uncle Distillery. Tasting is available for a nominal fee. Open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm.

Golden Pride Mango Winery – The winery is about 45 minutes from Atherton along the Kennedy Highway. After you drive through Mareeba continue on until you reach a small town named Biboohra. Turn right into Bilwon Road and drive along until you reach the sign for the “Golden Pride Mango Winery”. There's a fee for tasting the wines but is waived if you purchase a bottle of wine. Open 7 days a week from 8am to 6.30pm.

Granite Gorge – The Gorge is located at Mareeba on Chewko Road to get there from Atherton drive along the Kennedy Highway and turn left at the first roundabout near Coles shopping center. Travel 12km down Chewko Road until you see the sign for Granite Gorge. At the Gorge you will view a staggering landscape of gigantic weird shaped boulders, hand feed a colony of wild Rock Wallabies, swim in the water hole, explore the caves, lookouts and spot a variety of native animals. Open 7 days a week from 8am to 5pm, entrance fee payable.

Go Kart Racing - Approx. 10 minutes out of Mareeba along the Dimbulah Road is the world-class facility international racetrack. Take a spin around the track, challenge your friend or partner to a race or have a putt on with the mini golf. Cold drinks and refreshments available. The track is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm but closed during the wet weather.

The Waterfall Circuit – Some of the most photographed waterfalls are on this 12km circuit located just out of Millaa Millaa on the Palmerston Highway. There are three falls on the circuit starting with the Millaa Millaa Falls where you can have a bbq and a swim. Next is the Zillie Falls which can be viewed from a platform near the road. Last on the circuit is Ellinjaa Falls, this secluded falls are great for swimming and spotting the turtles sunning on the rocks.

Tinaroo Danbulla State Forest Drive
– This 35km gravel road drive starts at the Dam Wall and winds around the back of Tinaroo Dam. There are many things to see on this drive including the Mobo Creek Crater, Lake Euramoo, Cathedral Fig and historical sites such as the old School House and the Chimneys. There are five camping areas which must be pre-booked - Phone 13 13 04 or view website.

Four plus hours

Chillagoe, North Queensland, AustraliaHot Air Ballooning – Located at Mareeba, the Hot Air Ballooning is an unforgettable experience. You will be picked up at the Mareeba Heritage Centre at about 4:45am and then taken to the launch site. The ride begins at about 6am with the preparations such as sending up the weather balloons to find the wind direction and speed to determine the launch site, inflation of the balloons and sunrise. There are two 30-minute flights each morning with the option of a hot buffet and champagne breakfast. After the flight you can partake in the packing up of the Balloon. Booking is required. Cost varies.

Undara – Located approx. 2-3 hours from Atherton along the Kennedy Highway Undara offers a range of tours and accommodation to suit everyone. With Country style meals and hospitality your stay at Undara is an ideal way to experience the Australian’s outback and people. Bookings are essential and cost varies.

Innot Hot Springs – Experience the Innot Hot spring at the Innot Hot Springs Leisure and Health Park by bathing in one of the six pools filled with thermal mineral water from the Hot Springs of Nettle Creek. There is a small entrance fee to use the pools for a day but is free if you are staying in any of their various accommodations. They also now offer massages, therapy rooms, sauna and a tennis court. This park is located along the Kennedy Highway about 80km from Atherton.

Chillagoe – It takes approx. 2hours travel from Atherton by traveling along the Kennedy Highway until Mareeba then drive through Mareeba and turn left down the Mareeba-Dimbulah Road and drive for a 1.5 hours till you reach Chillagoe. This Limestone covered town has many attractions including the Chillagoe Smelters, The Royal Arch Cave, Donna Cave, Trezkinn Cave, Balancing Rock, swimming holes, the museum and the Hub visitors centre. Fees for cave tours.

The Observatory
at Chillagoe is also well worth paying a visit especially during the clear days of winter.

Two to four hour food & wine drives

Coffee Works – Follow the signs along the Kennedy Highway to Mareeba about 30 minutes drive. On arriving in Mareeba turn left at the Jackaroo Motel and then take the next turn to the right down Mason Street and you will see the sign for the Coffee Works. The Coffee Works offers a in dept look at the commercial side of coffee production and have a huge range of coffees, plungers, mugs and other gift items for sale. A chocolate making section at rear of complex is a must to visit and sample the goodies. The coffee shop has cakes and slices and other meals available. Fee for tours.

Tropical fruit grown in MareebaDe Brueys Boutique Winery – situated off the Kennedy Highway just after you leave Mareeba heading for Kuranda on the right hand side.This Boutique is well known for its range of delicious fruit wines. Come in and sample them.

Mungalli Creek Dairy – This unique dairy is a Certified organic/bio-dynamic farm which makes cheese and yogurt bring on the premises. Free tasting of their cheese is available between 10am to 4pm daily.

Atherton Tableland Regional Gallery Gallos Chocolate & Cheese –A very popular venue For chocolate lovers, Swiss chocolates lactose free, and also a large display of cheeses to suit the taste of everyone. Just 20 minutes from Atherton on the Malanda Road, Gallos also boasts a cool airy restaurant, where tasty meals are served up daily.

Skyburys Coffee Plantation is a multi award Winning attraction, whose coffees are exported all around the World. Plantation tours, a first class movie on coffee growing, and delicious meals and beverages are all a part of Skyburys uniqueness. Situated on the Dimbulah Road after heading north out of Mareeba, you will see the Dimbulah Road turn off on your left. Approximately 30 minutes Along this road on your left you will drive into the Skyburys complex. Open 7 days a week fee for tours.
